Understanding Disability Insurance
Disability insurance is designed to compensate an insured person for a portion of lost income due to an illness or disabling injury. Weekly or monthly benefit payments are made for a specified period during the continuance of an individual’s disability.
Given the present economy, disability insurance is of the utmost importance. Major illnesses or accidents can drastically impact an individual’s ability to cover even basic living expenses, and can completely undermine one’s standard of living due to lost income.
Often people think of "disability" as referring only to individuals who are wheel chair bound or in permanent hospital confinement due to severe accidents or illness. In fact, disability more commonly means having vision or back problems, or being temporarily sidelined as you recover from a heart attack or cancer. Disability insurance protects you from loss of income during these times. ComparePolicies.com offers a variety of disability insurance plans, including:
Group Long Term and Short Term Disability Plans
These are most frequently found in employer-employee business environments, and in many cases are paid either in full or in part by the employer. Short term disability plans are typically written with shorter elimination periods (such as seven, 15 or 30 days) and no more than a 13- or 26-week benefit period. Long term disability plans are typically written with a 30-day or longer elimination period, and range from a two-year benefit period all the way “to age 65” (which is the most frequently seen benefit period). There are usually very few optional benefits available with these types of plans. In a growing number of circumstances, these plans can be voluntary, in which case the employee pays all or a large portion of the premium.
Voluntary Job Site Disability Plans
Voluntary job site disability plans are offered through an employer, but paid for by the employee on a voluntary basis. These plans are typically low in cost, but benefit amounts are sometimes less than that offered through individual policies. An economical alternative to higher-priced individual plans, voluntary job site disability plans are a good choice for many workers.
Individual Disability Plans
Individual Disability policies are an option when group plans are not available, and in many situations can offer additional amounts and types of coverage not available in a group policy.
